Summary (English)
ARCHAEOLOGICAL EXPLORATIONS IN PLOVDIV (Ivo Topalilov – i_topalilov@abv.bg) The site is situated near the cliff of Nebet Tepe Hill, outside the fortification walls of Philippopolis. Two ashlars of the Ottoman period, placed over a Late Antique structure, were preserved. The ashlars served as the foundation of a wall built of dried bricks. Five midden pits were discovered. An Early Christian tomb of the Late Antiquity was explored. The tomb has a rectangular lay-out and measures 5.30 m by 5.90 m. It is preserved up to 1.92 m in height. The funerary monument consists of three burial chambers oriented east – west and a dromos situated from their eastern side, which is oriented north – south and has three entrances to each chamber. The tomb is built of uneven stones bonded with mortar. The interior walls are constructed of bricks bonded with mortar. The floor in the burial chambers is paved with bricks and the floor in the dromos was covered with timber boards. The burial chambers were plastered with mortar. The tomb dates to the 5th – 6th century AD. Eight pits of the Hellenistic period, which are up to 1.80 m in diameter, were explored.
