Summary (English)

  • During the 2016 campaign, excavation continued in the ancient Etruscan town situated on the plateau of the Rocca di Parlascio, in the area of Casciana Terma. The territory of Parlascio, strategically situated between Pisa and Volterra, seems to have functioned as a link between the area under the control of the centre standing at the mouth of the river Arno and the territory of Volterra. The past campaigns uncovered the remains of a large settlement that developed in the area from the late 7th century B.C. until the late Classical period. During this season, work continued on the holes identified last year in a substantial sediment that had a rectangular plan. The shape and alignment of the holes suggests they were post-holes, supporting a sloping roof that covered the western part of the rectangular sediment.

It appears there were two construction phases, although it will only be possible to clarify the relationship between them during the next campaigns.
Work also continued on an imposing cylindrical underground structure, similar to a well, but without a lining, and c. 2 m in diameter. Since 2007, several layers of fill have been removed, all containing abundant finds. In this campaign, about half a metre of sediment was excavated, reaching a depth of 7 m. These layers were relatively poor in anthropological material but contained a large quantity of unworked stones of varying sizes. A preliminary analysis of the finds suggests they can be considered coherent chronologically, dating to between the archaic and early Classical period. The fieldwork involved students from Italian and European universities, and volunteers from the Gruppo Archeologico Le Rocche di Casciana.
