Summary (English)

  • The archaeological site of Kadijski krst is located in the southwest outskirts of the city of Knjaževac, on the right bank of the Svrljiški Timok. In the fall of 2003, trench-type excavations were carried out with the aim of determining the stratigraphic situation of this multi-layered site. Four trenches were opened on three separate locations with an overall area of 74 m2 (two trenches 4×6 m named Sector I, one trench 2×10 m – Sector II and a control trench 1.50×4 m – Sector III). Aside from a large number of sherds belonging to the Starčevo culture (highly burnished monochrome pottery, mostly red-fired small pots with a short everted rim and tunnel-shaped handles in the center of a rounded belly, sherds with “pseudo-impressed” decoration, most often finger-nail imprints and more rarely pinching), the material sequence from this layer consists of a small number of flint tools, part of a grinder, animal bones and small pieces of daub. Remains of a shallow, sunken-floor dwelling were also found in this layer. The dwelling was dug into the loess-type soil with traces of burned daub and pottery sherds on its floor. Another significant find is a small ornamental needle with knot-shaped head (the so-called pseudo-Cyprian needle), which also belongs to the Early Bronze Age layer.
