Summary (English)

  • The first archaeological finds from Staro selo date back to the middle of the 20th century when the brick factory, build on this place, was operational. Since then, the site has been
surveyed several times and defined as a multilayered archaeological site. In the mid nineties, earthworks were opened on the north-eastern and northern edges of the site aimed at renewing the operations of the brick factory. These earthworks damaged several archaeological structures. Traces of archaeological features could be seen in the sections of the pits on the brick factory grounds. During the summer of 2002, the National Museum in Pančevo carried out trench-type excavations in the north-eastern part of the pit. The layers and features registered belong to the periods of: the Starčevo culture, 3rd-4th, 11th-13th; 14th-15th and 16th-18th centuries. The National Museum in Pančevo continued the trench-type excavations in Staro selo in 2003. The excavations in trenches number 7 and 8 confirmed the existence of modern layers and layers belonging to 16th-18th centuries. The layers, 0.5-0.7 m thick, showed the remains of five contemporary archaeological features (three sunken-floor dwellings, one with traces of post-holes, and two round storage pits -features 18-22). A large number of artefacts was uncovered, as well as sherds of fine “mohačka” pottery, Turkish and Austrian tableware and domestically produced pottery. In trench number 9, remains of a larger rectangular house were discovered containing a significant number of pottery sherds. The house and the material were roughly dated to the 14th-15th century (feature 17). In the area of trench 2 opened in 2002, (along the north-eastern section of the pit created during the earthworks mentioned) a round pit was entirely excavated. A hoard of iron tools (axe, sickles, knives) was discovered at its bottom, along with pottery sherds dated roughly to the 4th-5th century. The pit was filled with a great quantity of large pieces of daub with imprints of wattle..
