    Summary (English)

    • In October 2007 a new excavation was undertaken in insula 7 of Regio IX, concentrated in various sectors of the insula. One of the sectors involved house number 26, as well as the sidewalk in front of the entrance to houses at number 24-25.

The trenches aimed at a better definition of some chronological aspects of the earliest phases brought to light in the 2004 and 2006 campaigns.

In fact, in previous campaigns a wall, presumably of Classical date, was uncovered on the sidewalk in front of house IX, 7, 25 and its probable continuation in house IX, 7, 26. The 2007 trenches uncovered this structure to a length of circa 5 m, which was preserved below the wall between houses IX, 7, 25 and 26, and also the related floor levels.

New investigations will be undertaken in order to further define the chronology and examine all the earliest occupation phases in this sector of the city.

Interesting data also emerged for the latest occupation phases in the area, relating to the construction and successive occupation phases of house IX, 7, 25-26.

In fact, in room IX, 7, 26 a tank was uncovered, its function unknown, below the floor level of the last occupation phase of the house and datable to the 2nd century B.C. At the moment of the 79 A.D. eruption it seems the room was being restructured given that two deep cuts filled with lapilli, in situ, were found.

The excavation on the sidewalk led to the definition of the stratigraphic sequence of the pavement levels of the sidewalk itself and of the various systems supplying water to house IX, 7, 25, the first build of which dates to the first half of the 3rd century B.C.
