Summary (English)

  • The investigation on the site of the medieval village of Apigliano concentrated on area XII where a possible Byzantine structure had previously been identified. The archaeological material present was datable to the early medieval period (8th-10th century). The structure consisted of a square pit dug into the ground, with a fill of layers containing an abundance of stones and ashy soil, with ceramic material dating to between the 8th-10th century.

The pit overlay, and partly cut, the bedrock. In the north-eastern corner the bedrock had been used to create an entrance passage to the structure. The most likely hypothesis is that this is a hut bottom similar to the structures found in the locality of Scorpo, in the territory of Supersano (Lecce), also excavated by P. Arthur in 2004. In the area adjacent to the pit was a series of rock-cut post-holes but they provided no dating evidence. At the southern edge of the area a sub-circular hole was found, filled with a dump of animal bones and pottery of Angevin date (second half of the 13th-14th century).
