During the 2000 campaign, the excavations at Gherghiţa were conducted at “La Târg”, near the church founded by Prince Matei Basarab, in 1641 and “Şcoala Generală” in the present village. At “La Târg”, by excavating section S. 2, (30 m long and 1.5 m wide) four medieval houses were discovered. One of them had a stone foundation and two kilns. At “Şcoala Generală”, by excavating section S. 3, (17 m long and 1.5 m wide), we uncovered a wall made of stone joined to another one with mortar, 0.6 m wide. The archaeological material, especially pottery discovered in the two locations mentioned above allows the dating of the finds to the 16th century.
