    Summary (English)

    • A Roman farm was discovered after field survey, located around a hundred meters below the cemetery of Contignano. The Soprintendenza has carried out annual excavations on the site between 1999 and 2003. These revealed structures relating to the farm in two distinct areas of the site.

The first excavations concentrated on a large refuse pit (m 9.40 × 7.20), containing very abundant pottery dating between the end of the first century b.C. and the beginning of the second century A.D., with much Italian sigillata stamped with names in rectangular cartouches and in planta pedis, cooking wares, loom weights, dolia, transport amphorae and glass.

At some 35 m. downslope from this deposit, an area of around 120 m2 was investigated in 2002-2003, disclosing a building with a trapezoidal plan (15.40 × 6 m), oriented east-west with its long side facing the valley of the river Orcia below. The walls were built in river cobbles, chinked with smaller pebbles and mortar. The north side of the building was destroyed by ploughing, with the exception of a short stretch around 3 m. long. The presence of two square foundations along the centre of the room suggests wooden supports for the roof, while traces of a pavement using tiny ceramic sherds may be attributed to the first phase of the building, which was then reconstructed with pavements in opus signinum. The construction was destroyed by a fire in the middle of the second century A.D.
