Summary (English)

  • Balş – Sturza House, also known as The Old Post or The Great Post is located at 3 Cuza Vodă Street. In the relevant literature, the building is dated to the middle of the 19th century. During ample consolidation works, massive walls were found inside the building, so rescue excavations were necessary. After the excavations, we identified foundations and parts the palace main structure. The palace dates to the end of the 18th century, belonging to the Balş boyar family. They were the landowners of a very large plot of land on the north-eastern side of the mediaeval town, where another family’s branch had built another palace. Nearby the palaces, the “St. Dumitru” Church had been built and was considered the family’s foundation and cemetery.
