Summary (English)
The Calvinist Church of Ákos is one the best preserved Romanesque monuments in Transylvania, belonging to a former Benedictine abbey. During the archaeological excavations conducted in 2002 we opened a section in the inner of the abbey church, in order to verify the existing foundations and the extent of the interventions made during the restoration of 1896-1902. The survey included the eastern bay of the northern aisle, which made it possible to verify the hypothetical eastern tower. At the western side of this bay, a massive foundation was identified, which seems to be earlier than the northern wall of the aisle and the northeastern pillar. On the western side, we identified the foundation of a wall, which probably separated the eastern bay of the aisle and the main sanctuary. Toward the west of this foundation another foundation belonging to a staircase was identified. The results of the excavations established that no eastern tower existed here, due to the fact that the discovered foundations were contemporaneous. The question of the earlier phase remains open, further investigations being necessary in the main sanctuary.
