Summary (English)

  • The Calvinist Church of Acâş is among the best preserved Romanesque monuments of Transylvania, belonging to a disappeared monastery. The archaeological research was started in 1998 aiming to identify the building phases, and the disappeared features of the monastery. The archaeological excavation in 2003 opened three trenches on the western and northern sides of the abbey church. The foundations of the church were investigated at the south-western tower, and at the north-western tower, together with the wall of the northern aisle. At these two points, the building features were identical and corresponded to the earlier observations made during the previous campaigns. In addition, the stratigraphical evidence of the restoration made in 1896 and 1902 was identified. In the campaign of 2003, 31 burials were recovered, so the total number of the burials reaches 70. They can be grouped in two horizons: the medieval burials with lower depth, and some burials made with bricks; and the burials belonging to the priest families, dating from the 18th and 19th century. In the trench XIII a ditch marking the mediaeval boundary of the monastery was identified.
