Summary (English)

  • During this campaign we intend to excavate entirely the Neolithic complexes at Balta Sărată, levels 2 and 1, which were not spread evenly in the area of the site. An inspection at the Ruginosu site stopped the poacher’s activity. House 26. This house was EW – NS oriented, with a little deviation to the west. The house was used for a long time from the beginning of Vinca B1 and has three renewal phases. The west wall of the house has a foundation trench (40 cm deep and 30 cm wide). This trench was excavated only on an area of 40 cm. The wall was made of vertical (the distance between them was of 1.2 – 1.4 m) and horizontal girders. In the end consistent clay plaster was added. The house was not destroyed by fire. The west wall was for a longer time in its initial position and only later collapsed. We believe that this house has a social or religious role (few artifacts; we found kilns, a large fireplace; the inventory of pit 32, with offerings: a polishing stone, a vertical grinding stone, other three stones). Sunken-floored house 27. At about -55 – 60 cm, we discovered a level with a lot of archaeological material.). House 28. At a depth of -1.2 m we discovered the traces of a clay floor, partially burned. This house had either two rooms or one room and a cell. In c. B2, at the same depth, we discovered the traces of a kiln (G30). At the bottom of the pit we found sherds of big pots, as well as earth mixed with charcoal and burned. The pit of this sunken-floored house was about 12 – 15 cm deeper than the walking level. This pit had a triangular plan, with rounded corners. In the east corner of house 28 we discovered the traces of an unburned column. The base of this column was made of river stones and in the middle there were the sherds of a stemmed cup. The column was about 10 cm deep in the earth. Such columns are known at Parţa Sanctuary 1 (Banat culture, phase 2), at Căscioarele (small column) or in the Neolithic sanctuary at Kormadin. Foundation pit. At about 1 m from the column, in the south room, we discovered a foundation pit. This pit contained a vertical polishing stone and other four stones.
