Summary (English)
The 2003 excavations at Cucuieţi-Slatina Veche represent the first researches in this newly discovered site. This salt spring was frequented from Neolithic and Chalcolithic Ages (Precucuteni and Cucuteni cultures) since the Iron Age and, as a result, a two metres archaeological deposit was formed. The levels consist in large masses of ash and charcoal, burned soil – remains of kilns without a well-defined structure, and a large amount of sherds. There were no usual artifacts found in these levels, neither traces of buildings, which indicates that we are dealing with a temporary camp laid out from time to time for producing the crystallised salt from the spring salty water. At the present state of researches we agree that a large amount of pottery belongs to an early phase of the Middle Bronze Age, closest analogies being encountered at Lunca-“Poiana Slatinei”. Also, the environment is very similar to that of Lunca, including a wooded area, salty waters and a semi-permanent drinking water source in the proximity of the site.
