Summary (English)

  • In Aprilie and May 2003, we continued the rescue excavation in the settlement of Olteni – “Cariera de nisip”. We opened two new trenches (S 10 and S 11). The research within the trench S 9, opened in 2002, also continued. S 9 was opened in 2002. In the same year, within this trench, near the quarry edge we discovered the dwelling L 2. Because of the fall of the quarry’s edge, the north side of this complex (about 30%) was destroyed. In 2003, when the researches were resumed, we excavated dwelling L 2. Its outline was detected at 0.40 m depth, about 0.1 m over the sterile soil level. At this level, L 2 showed as a black-coloured spot mixed with charcoal, wattle and daub fragments. It was rectangle-shaped with rounded corners (5.20 × 3.40 m) and oriented to the east – west. The pit of L 2 was excavated in steps down to 0.76 m depth. It is filled with black soil mixed with wooden and burned clay pieces. Sporadically, in the complex belonging to Noua culture sherds appeared, but Sântana de Mureş – Chernjahov type pottery prevailed. On the bottom of L 2 we found an agglomeration of black ash. Besides the numerous sherds we also discovered several pieces: the clay pyramid-shaped loom-weight with square base, perforated in its upper part; the hand-made cup-rushlight with the handle tied to the entire height of the body; the flat spindle-whorl made of sherds. In S 10 (896 msq.) we researched 30 pits, three of them belonging to the Noua culture, and 17 to the Sântana de Mureş-Chernjahov culture. Ten pits could not be dated because of the lack of relevant material.
