The archaeological researches in the site of Copăcelu took place between the 16th of July and the 31st of August, 2003. This is the place where D. Berciu conducted systematic researches between 1961 and 1965. The researches continued in 2002 when ten sections were excavated (rescue excavations were conducted and a district was built there for the victims of the calamity at Ocnele Mari). In 2003 new systematic researches began in the Early Neolithic occupation level. We searched for new elements to confirm the existence of a Bronze Age occupation. We discovered archaeological materials from the Early Neolithic, belonging to IIIB-IVA phases of the Starcevo-Criş culture (5485-5334 – KN-I. 102), and from the Bronze Age, materials belonging to Glina culture, to the Gornea-Orleşti cultural group (Verbicioara I?) and to the late phases of the Verbicioara culture. The archaeological researches of last year made it possible for us to delimit a part of the site in the researched area, to uncover the cultural layer and the finds.
