Summary (English)

  • In 1956, Gheorghe Diaconu and his team began the archaeological excavations at Târgşoru Vechi, situated 9 km north-west from the town of Ploieşti. The objectives of the 2003 archaeological campaign were to excavate the west part of the Sântana de Mureş-Cerneahov cemetery (sector B) and resume, after a long break, the research of the settlements from the 1st millennium (sector D). In sector B we finalized section S.IIIB, started in 2001 (62 × 2 m), and uncovered an inhumation grave. We also opened a new area in the north-east corner of the second mediaeval courtyard (8 .30 × 6.5 m), where we discovered the ruins of one or two buildings from the 17th – 18th centuries. In sector D we excavated two trenches in order to identify the excavations dating from the ‘60s, especially the main trench SI. Also we documented 16 archaeological complexes dating to the Bronze Age, the Hallstatt, the 2nd – 3rd centuries A.D. and to the Middle Ages (16th – 17th centuries).
