Summary (English)

  • Surveys were conducted inside the Roman-Catholic Cathedral in Alba Iulia, namely inside the vestry and inside and outside Laszay chapel. The sizes and location of the surveys were those established by the client, according to the works, that the latter intends to carry out in the two compartments. The Gothic vestry. From the partial research of the Romanesque cathedral wall it was found that the foundation was designed with a breaking step large enough to provide a continuous foundation to the articulation pillars. The Gothic choir adjoins a rectangular building with the south corners supported by oblique abutments. The Baroque vestry at first extended to the small apse of the south lateral nave, whose current form shaped in the early 20th century. Stratigraphically we identified material traces from the Roman and post-Roman periods, overlapped by an Arcadian layer, followed by a layer probably relating to the preparation of the surface for the constructive activity from the Early Middle Ages. The Chapel In the south-east corner of Laszay chapel we distinguished two occupation phases from the Roman period: the first one is characterized by a dwelling with at least two compartments, and the second Roman occupation level has a floor made of mortar mixed with brick powder. The oldest masonry structure is a wall almost parallel to the elevation of the cathedral and built directly on the Roman flooring. It is difficult to specify to what period dates this construction (either the late Roman period, or the Early Middle Ages – earlier than the 13th century) because of the interventions from the 20th century. We found a layer with mediaeval graves belonging to the cathedral from the 12th century, and we excavated ten of them. Two of the deceased were buried in wooden coffins, and the rest in cists or in the bricked pit.
