Summary (English)

  • Sfântu Gheorghe (St. George) Monastery is situated on the middle course of Bârzana River, on an old arm of the watercourse, in a wooded area in Gătaia Plain. A modernised earth road links it along three km to the Reşiţa – Timişoara highway. The Ottoman documents from 1566 – 1567 read that the patron saint of the monastery is Sfântu Gheorghe din Nahia (St. George of Nahia). The archaeological excavations uncovered occupation and activity traces from the 16th century. We found a thick layer with occupation traces (pottery, adobe, nails, animal bones), that delimits a sunken floored building. Deep down, at -1.8 m, representing the bottom of the pit we found traces of burned beams 1.4 m long and 0.25 m thick. The consistent coal and burn traces reveal a devastating fire that destroyed the dwelling. That occupation level was overlapped by a compact brick and mortar layer. The lack of grave goods makes it difficult to date the tombs. We found also a coin from Rudolph I (1575 – 1602). In the current stage of researches, we might say about the tombs uncovered that they relate to an earlier date and a part of the burials were performed during the 17th century. The excavations at Sfântu Gheorghe (St. George) Monastery identified tombs and construction traces from the 16th century in the excavated area. The pottery found includes the category of coarsewares, as well as enameled pottery with analogies in the mediaeval world in Serbia.
