Summary (English)

  • In 2005 we undertook an archaeological survey in Brukenthal Palace Park in Avrig, Sibiu county, at the request of Samuel von Brukenthal Foundation. The goal of the excavation was to identify the original layout of the Baroque park, such as: vanished or altered alleys, the edge of the lake, possible arrangements related to a well, etc. The park was set up during the last part of the 18th century. The data gathered during the archaeological surveys do not yet suffice to figure out a detailed image of the evolution of this complex, namely the exact dating of certain alleys, round lawns, kiosks, etc. In a relative chronology, we might assert that the most used part of the park (and of course, the oldest) is inside the precincts surrounded by a wall (with the main alley and the large well). In section 2, under the old alley, there are several evening layers suggesting successive settings of the treading layer. The situation is broadly the same also in section 3. Outside the precinct wall the extension of the main alley has a single treading level, which points to a short time usage. All the other outside surveys revealed similar simpler situations. Thus it is obvious that the park extended later beyond the walls, but it is not possible to specify the period accurately. The area of the English park is also a late extension, as here simple arrangements were identified, without a too complicated stratification.
