    Summary (English)

    • The “St. Nicholas” Church of Udricani, in the centre of Bucharest, was built in the first half of the 18th century by Udrican Clucerul. The archaeological investigation started in the autumn of 2005 on the south side of the church (in five surfaces) and uncovered 100 graves belonging to the first half of the 19th century. The graves were marked by stone-crosses. We found about 25 pieces bearing inscriptions in Cyrillic characters. Together with further inscriptions on bricks, the funerary texts read the names and, in some cases, the status of the dead members of the small community (e.g. lay, nun or monk). All the graves had coins among the goods. Other items, especially fabrics and leather, are now being investigated. The Late Middle Ages and modern cemetery was disturbed by occupation and construction pits (for lime preparation). A large construction pit was filled with waste from the surrounding households (pottery, faience, porcelain, glass etc.), shedding light on the everyday life of the community living there at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries.
