The 2005 excavations in the Roman auxiliary fort at Vărădia-“Pustă” identified a building at the back of the principia which – although of timber and functioning as barracks – had a different structure from the latter. Thus, we did not find any trace of red-burned daub like at the barracks, although this building was also destroyed by fire. Another trench was excavated in front of the porta praetoria, the main gate of the fort, in order to establish the stratigraphy in this zone. The finds of the two trenches are various, even if not numerous (pottery, sherds from cups, sling balls, iron nails in the timber building; roof tile fragments – unfortunately without any tile stamps – and a rather damaged bronze coin in front of the main gate).
