Summary (English)

  • This complex is a house consisting of a small atrium and a peristyle garden. Around the atrium were several living rooms. More luxurious spaces were north of the peristyle. After the house collapsed because of an earthquake, a fullonica was built in the peristyle garden, but the house did not loose its residential function. The complex was excavated in 1875.

In 2007, a fieldwork campaign of the Radboud University Nijmegen investigated large parts of the taberna connected to the house, which was the shop of the fullonica, and parts of the working area in the peristyle. A hitherto undocumented mosaic in the entrance of the taberna was rediscovered and studied. It contained a unique ensemble of commercial iconography and it is the only mosaic of this nature known in a Pompeian taberna. In the back yard, it was possible to reconstruct the discharge system of the fullonica and the separate collection system of rainwater.
