Summary (English)
An archaeological inspection was undertaken between January 2005 and February 2006 following the demolition of the Rossi ex-distillery, situated over a large area of circa 2.700 m2, at the corner of via Mazzini and via San Martino. The investigation identified numerous distinct zones of archaeological interest but that were limited in size. There was no stratigraphic relationship between them as they were separated by a sterile layer and cut by the distillery’s foundations. However, a stretch of road built in the early Imperial period and a Roman well had survived together with a large quantity of Roman pottery concentrated in several pits. In a later period, probably mid-late Imperial, the road was abandoned.
The stone well of mid Imperial date, contained a notable quantity of pottery dating to between the 2nd and 3rd-4th centuries A.D. Amongst the material found the most important pieces are datable to the late Imperial period: several fragments of large listed basins, one of which with finger impressions on the rim, a fragment of a glazed bowl and a fragment of a large listed soapstone basin.
