The nuraghe tomb of Su Picante, situated on the plateau overlooking Rio Gaddare in the region denominated Jorgi Ufrattu, falls within the category of orthostatic giant’s tombs with central monumental stele. Although the imposing structure has been devastated by the actions of illegal excavators including the use of a mechanised digger, it is still quite legible.

The monument, built entirely of granite, comprised a long rectangular corridor with an apse at the end. It was constructed with large slabs placed on edge alternating with courses of blocks. The chamber was originally covered with flat slabs, now lying discarded near the structure, arranged to form a flat arch and, as usual was covered by a tumulus of earth and stones the shape of which was clearly visible. At the front was the semicircular exedra which defined the ceremonial area. The latter preserved, still in situ, although mostly overturned, a large number of the orthostats with which it was formed. These uprights were presumably supported to the rear by an arched wall which linked the exedra to the body of the tomb. The stele which stood in the centre, certainly of notable size, was removed at some point in time. On the left of the tomb there was a circular structure whose function and dating are at present being studied. To date the nuraghe and/or village to which the giant’s tomb must have belonged has not been identified.

As well as the excavation and consolidation of the funerary structure of Su Picante, in the territory of Siniscola during the summer of 2008 maintenance work will to be undertaken together with the fencing in and remaking of the system of signs in the nuraghe archaeological area of Su Itichinzu. This is the site of another tomb, Conca Umosa, where a settlement was situated comprising a small nuraghe, several huts and a rock shelter. Maintenance work is also foreseen in the grotto sanctuary of Sa Prejone ‘e s’Orcu which was reached via a sort of well with steps. This also probably dates to the Bronze Age.
