Summary (English)

  • On the northeastern side of the main square at the modern city of Durrës (ancient Dyrrhachion), on a side of the G. Durrsaku street, were discovered remains of a byzantine building as well as 17 graves of the 7th to 9th century A.D.
The excavations of the monument revealed two phases of construction. The first phase is represented by a 3 m long wall line of the Opus Latericum technique (tiles measuring to 0, 35 × 0, 16 × 0, 04m) dating to the 5th – 6th century A.D. The second phase dates to the 9th century A.D., and is represented by other wall lines made by stones and tile fragments bounded up with mortar.
Other important finds coming out from the stratigraphical levels of the second phase are the amphora of Otranto 1 and 2 type and jars of the 10th – 12th century A.D. In the other
layers are founded glazed fragments of pottery, proto maiolica vessel types, and other important finds dating to the end of the 13th beginning of the 14th century. There were found vessels decorated with the graffito technique, where are obvious bird motives and medallion styles.
During the excavation of this monument between levels 1.10 m and 1.40 m, were discovered 17 graves. Most of the graves are simple and have tile coverings. In the grave number 3, a bronze clasp was found while in the grave number 5 were revealed pieces of an arched bronze objects (maybe a fibula). Some of the graves, based on the construction typology and the funeral ritual, date to the 6-7th century A.D., while the other graves belong to a later historical period.
The archaeological excavation undertaken in this area of the Byzantine city revealed the remains of a late antique building, reconstructed during the medieval period. The graves present in the area confirm that the territory around the monument was used as a cemetery during the medieval period.
