Summary (English)

  • An important discovery was made just inside the suburbium of Teano, in via Vallerano, on the Fornaro property not far from the railway station. The site is situated along the south-western edge of an ancient road, of which the remains of the original paving of basoli could be seen in several points. During work on the construction of a house a large pit was revealed excavated in the tufa bedrock. This had been filled in antiquity by an enormous dump (circa 200 fragments) of architectural elements in grey tufa, almost entirely derived from the destruction of a single building. They comprised orthostats, squared blocks and elements of Doric trabeation, banded architraves, parts of doors, Ionic volutes, Doric column drums, all of which mixed with chippings and waste material from the reworking of the blocks themselves.

It is suggested that these may have belonged to a monumental altar, datable to between the 3rd-2nd century B.C., comparable to similar Sicilian monuments (the altar of Ierone II), as well as terracotta altars ( arulae ) and Italo-Etruscan sarcophagi. The structure may have been part of a sanctuary, unknown today, situated in the vicinity and just outside the urban area, that was destroyed during the course of the 1st century B.C. or, at the latest, of the 1st century A.D.
