    Summary (English)

    • This season work took place on the west and east sides of the site.

On the west side (Area 1000, trench III), the investigation of two man-made terraces was completed. Situated at the far south of the plateau they were the result of an intervention to level the slope in the early 16th century. The 2016 campaign concentrated on the lower terrace, where previous investigations identified traces of metalworking activity – the refining of cupriferous minerals. More stratigraphy relating to production activities was found in the area (slag, drippings, layers containing abundant charcoal or altered by exposure to heat), dating to the late 13th century. Material datable to the middle Bronze Age was also found here, in secondary deposition, attesting the long occupation of the slope.

The excavations carried out in various areas of artificial plateau E (Area 3000, sectors B-E-F) examined stratigraphy datable to the Modern period (15th-16th century) and the 18th century. Areas and structures used in the phases of steeping/leaching and testing the product (open spaces, channels and furnaces), or relating to construction activity (brick/tile kilns) were investigated.

A small trench was opened (sectors B-E), situated west of an imposing structure used for the leaching of the product. The discovery of the remains of channels, some filled with a pinkish sediment which, analysed in situ using XRF, showed significant levels of aluminium (over 5%) indicating that this space was probably used for leaching the product.

In sector F, the excavation of a partially standing quadrangular structure was completed (begun in 2015). Based on the typology and the new elements identified it can be interpreted as a brick/tile kiln, built in a late period on an area that was previously open and paved in opus signinum (probably an open space for steeping/leaching). The structure was of great use within the alum mine complex for the furnaces’ many necessities (particularly repairs).
The excavation was also completed of a section of channelling (4.0 × 1.27 m), which cut the plateau on an east-west alignment, linking the production structures to the Risecco torrent. The removal of numerous accumulations of sediment, very rich in aluminium, revealed the floor made of large cobblestones bonded with mortar. The presence of sulphur in the sediments suggests that the latest waste related to the steeping/leaching of the mineral that took place in the 18th century.

A small production structure connected to a quadrangular vat situated at the southern end of the plateau was also excavated. The construction technique and position date it to the 18th century phase. The morphology, comparable with that of the large lime kilns, and the reduced dimensions suggest that these were structures used for testing the mineral ore.
