Summary (English)

  • As in previous campaigns, this year’s excavations were concentrated in the area inside the building (sector 10000), where the removal of surface US 10023 from the eastern arm of the ambulatory was completed.

The under-floor tombs situated mainly in the western arm of the ambulatory (the examination of which was completed) and the central nave were excavated. At the end of the season, two burials were excavated in the eastern arm. As documented in 2010, almost all of the tombs were completely robbed, although in some cases it was possible to identify intact deposition levels below the accumulations of material resulting from the robbing.

The pottery recovered from the tomb fills was mainly residual. Of note, beside the finds of a number of fragmentary funerary inscriptions (used for closing the upper levels of the well-tombs), was the presence of plaster fragments and mosaic tesserae, which it is suggested were part of the basilica decoration or of the connected funeral spaces. Small coins were present in several tombs, generally the only object placed in them, as the fragments of bone hairpins found during the excavation were not found in association with burials. Sculptural fragments, probably belonging to sarcophagi, datable to the mid imperial period, were found in the deposits associated with the robbing of the site in the post-antique period, that is, reused in the creation of late burials inside earlier well-tombs.

The aim is to complete the excavation of area 10000, including the excavation of the under-floor tombs in the central nave of the basilica and western arm of the ambulatory, during coming campaigns.
