Summary (English)

  • During work undertaken on occasion of the Jubilee, archaeological investigations were carried out on the edge of the western sector of the complex of early Christian and early medieval basilicas of Cimitile. Below the levels of the so-called “Pollena” (end of the 5th-beginning of the 6th century A.D.) eruption the excavation revealed a midden filled with tile fragments, charcoal residue and cooking pottery. Furthermore, it was ascertained that on its south side the apse foundation, of limestone cobbles, abutted that of the nave, built of irregular tufa blocks with a pronounced slope. ‘ Therefore, it was surmised that the apse was built in a later phase with respect to the original rectangular structure.

As well as the excavations linked to work on the architectural restoration, conservation work was undertaken on the decorative scheme and on the remains of the opus sectile floor of the apse of the “basilica nova”, created at the beginning of the 5th century by volition of S. Paolino. The mosaic aedicule built around the tombs of S. Felice and S. Paolino between the end of the 5th – beginning of the 6th century A.D. also underwent conservation. Inside the “basilica vetus” an Antiquarium was set up where some of the most significant finds and sculptural elements are displayed, documenting the site and attesting its importance from the Roman period until the 19th century.
