Summary (English)

  • Dating to the beginning of the 2nd century B.C. the villa was situated in the modern locality of Monteruscello. This vast flat area north-west of the town of Pozzuoli was crossed in antiquity by an offshoot of the via Capana linking Cumae with the plain of Quarto. Identified some years ago, the excavation of the pars fructuaria, added in the 1st century B.C., has now been completed. Of note were the two opus quasi reticulatum cisterns. One, with a barrel vaulted roof, was very large (9 × 5 m) and had a capacity of circa 225,000 litres. Like many other agricultural structures in Campania, the villa fell into disuse between the end of the 1st century A.D. and the first years of the 2nd century A.D. when the large cistern was transformed into a dump for materials from the demolition of a number of structures. However, it survived and some residual occupation was documented by restoration and the construction of new rooms. A 4th century A.D. coin, found in the opus caementicium wall of one of them, provided a certain _terminus post quem _ for the abandonment.
