Summary (English)

  • A villa built in the first dacades of the 1st century B.C. came to light along the line of the modern via Campana, during the construction of the sewer system in via Viticelle, in the trench opened to house the sewer line. The structure was certainly of some importance given the richness of the III style pictorial decoration, found not only _in situ _ but also in fragments in the layers of collapse. Two rooms were excavated, built in opus reticulatum preceded by an earlier phase in quasi reticulatum. they were frescoed with a black dado with a horizontal white fillet which had red bands bordered in white coming off from it, the latter supporting festoons over-painted in white. The dado was also articulated by a further two narrow fillets, also white, the lower of which was enriched with small ornamental motifs. Above the lower zone, the walls, in monochrome yellow, were divided into a number of panels, at the centre of which were figured pictures, whilst the upper part must have had a white background.

The first room excavated was paved with opus signinum and, outside was a well covered with a tufa slab and fed by a small channel. The room next to it preserved an opus signinum floor with white limestone tesserae arranged to form a network of hexagons. Beside the later an area paved in opus signinum was only partially investigated. Here, a well faced with signinum closed in by walls in opus quasi reticulatum and reticulatum was uncovered.
