Summary (English)

  • In the municipality of Volla excavation of lot 14, along the north-western edge of the Sebeto valley, brought to light a conduit built in a tunnel that was probably part of a branch of the Serino aqueduct. The aqueduct ran to the north and west of the Sebeto valley, crossing the territories of S. Anastasia, Pomigliano d’Arco, Casalnuovo, Afragola, Casoria and, after a stretch on a bridge, then continued below ground towards Naples. The conduit was dug into the Flegrean and Vesuvian volcanic layers, interspersed with ancient ground levels. Its vault had been destroyed but traces could be seen by the north-western edge of the excavation, while the rest was destroyed by a modern trench. The conduit partially preserved two masonry parapets, built up against the earth, which functioned as a facing and support. The upper part was constructed in opus reticulatum, the lower part in small tufa blocks. The obliteration layers filling the cuniculus in which the conduit was housed contained material which appeared to date to the 1st century A.D.

Lastly, a little to the west there was a complete change in the stratigraphy. Down to at least 3.00m below ground level, there were layers of sedimentary deposits, from a humid-marshy environment, interspersed with layers of peat. The cultivation trenches, intercepted in these layers, constituted part of a more extensive regular network of furrows circa 0.40 m wide alternating with wider ones (circa 1.30 m), probably with a different function connected with drainage.
