Summary (English)

  • In January 2009 the excavation of the road situated between the Villa San Marco complex to the south and an insula of the so-called urban installation to the north was completed. This stretch of the road ran up to the vaulted entrance at the western end and thus served the two opposite entrances. The work was undertaken to complete what had begun during 2008 at Villa S. Marco (cf. site file).

The excavation also looked at the south-western sector of the insula situated north of the road. This had been drawn on the Bourbon plan by K. Weber to show the presence of a central and somewhat isolated structure commonly, and probably correctly, interpreted as a bath building. Furthermore, the partial exploration in the 18th century led to the identification a number of rooms, abutting the southern perimeter wall, relating to the entrance from the road (9), part of a room (10) situated east of the entrance and other rooms (8, 7, 1A and 1B) west of the entrance. The latter intervention is still being evaluated. However, it is possible to say at this preliminary stage that this was a vast building, which, at least in its final form, linked in a single complex, via a wall perforated by doors and windows, the eastern sector centred on a bath structure and the western sector occupied to the south by a peristyle and small bath complex which was accessed directly from the entrance to the street.
