Summary (English)

  • In 2011 an intense campaign of maintenance and tree clearing was undertaken in the area of the upper castle of Attimis. In particular, the tower was completely cleared of trees, both inside and out. This work was carried out by volunteers from the Società Friulana di Archeologia-ONLUS and students from schools in the Veneto region (San Donà and Treviso). This was part of an educational project, providing an introduction to archaeology, involving the field schools of Aquileia and Attimis.
An agreement is in the process of being drawn up with the Centro Edile per la Formazione e la Sicurezza (Udine) with the aim of holding courses, on this site, dedicated to the analysis and maintenance of ancient walls, under the supervision of the Superintendency.

During the clearing, a few remains emerged, in particular in room C, mostly relating to the 14th century occupation of the room.
During the year, the materials from the previous years were studied. Most of the materials contained in the settling tank (UUSS 149-151) were published. The tank was probably connected with a forge that was in use in the castle from the mid 12th century onwards. The sealed context was also dated by a denaro piccolo or scodellato in billion alloy, minted by Orio Malipiero, the Doge of Venice between 1178 and 1192. The pottery from the context has opened a discussion regarding forms and fabrics previously attributed to earlier periods.

Among the materials conserved during 2011, an exceptional piece was a leaf pendant for a belt. Its front face presents a motif for which no parallels are known to date: an armed man wearing a helmet, brandishing a sword against a dog tied up by a rope. This probably refers to an event that actually took place and was perhaps a commissioned piece.
