Summary (English)

  • The site lies on a hill of volcanic origin near the village of Kokino in the Kumanovo region. On top of the hill there are two terraces formed by carving the volcanic rock. One of the terraces has a couple of stone seats and a platform used for astronomical observations in order to make a calendar. The site is on the official NASA list of ancient observatories. The archaeological investigations in 2001 – 2003 revealed sherds of bi-conical amphora like vessels, large and small pots, cups, kantharos like vessels, pyranoi, loom weights, querns, spindle whorls, stone mould for axes and a bronze pendant. According to the analogies from various sites of the Balkans, the site of Tatikjev Kamen may be dated frames between the 14th to 11th centuries BC. The archaeological campaign in 2005 aimed to determine the borders of the site and get a better view of the stratigraphy. The south terrace had two occupation levels.
The first one is from the Early Bronze Age (19th – 14th century BC) and the few remains are discovered directly on the bedrock. The second one is a settlement of the Iron Age (7th century). The house discovered has stone foundations and a beaten earth floor. Stone slabs and wooden posts were also used in the construction. Sherds of coarseware, bowls with incurved rim, pyranoi, quern, pithoi and piece of a jug with cut – away neck decorated with incised triangles are the inventory of the house.
At the north terrace there were circular structures carved in the rock. They were surrounded with stones and they had ritual purpose. The pottery found inside indicates dates from the Middle Bronze Age (17th to 14th century BC) and the Late Bronze Age (13th – 11th century BC).
