Summary (English)

  • The excavations of this year were located to the south of the wall 171 in the structure discovered in the previous year which was described as the entrance door to the mosaic building. It is opened toward the east and it faces the big road. It is similar to a wall in the shape of the letter “U”, placed directly to the eastern wall of the building. The lack of connection between these two walls shows that the entrance is added in a second period, possibly at the time when the second level of the mosaic was constructed. The area which is confined by this entrance represents a floor layer of irregular stone blocks. In this area were discovered some bronze coins which date to the second half of the first century B.C. The foundation walls of this entrance are made of local sandy stones. The northern extreme point of this structure is oblique and shows clear signs of demolition, which are due to a tectonic movements. An area was excavated between the big channel and the southern wall of the entrance, which was apparently part of the road, destroyed by the opening of Leon Rey’s trench. At the point where the southern corner of the entrance reaches the channel was discovered a trapezium base, from which has remained only the limestone layer of the foundation. The base and the entrance belong to the same period, later then the construction of the channel. Another quadrangular base was excavated in the area close by. To the north of it was revealed a stone floor layer, which belong to the western extreme of the big road, expanded in front of the mosaic building. On the eastern façade of the entrance were discovered four graves that seem to have damaged the limestone road. The bodies were placed on a supine position and directed toward the east. A coin of the year 1918 found in one of the graves date them to this later period of time.
