Summary (English)

  • The aim of this archaeological season was to excavate the western gateway to the mosaic building. Trenches B-G 12, located to the north of the threshold were excavated. The excavation of the stone layer US 348, uncovered a layer (US 362) and some tiles and bricks fragments. The excavation of this latter revealed a brick wall oriented north-south, which abutted the northern end of the threshold US 367. Below US 362 was revealed a destruction layer US 364, similar to US 348, but rich in stone fragments, extended along the southern wall of the gateway. On the northern side layer US 366 was cut by layer US 364 which occupied the entire area between the two walls. US 366 suggests presence of a deposit layer and also that the gateway has been altered. The excavation continued further to the north at the height of wall 367, in order to see the fill of layer 366. The column that supported the buttress on the southern wall was also excavated. The excavation was extended to the north revealing a complex archaeological situation. The construction of the column has destroyed the existing wall US 382, from which were left only two blocks. In the northern and southern walls of the gateway a big vertical cut was noticed, which suggests a violent movement of the terrain. The masonry study shows that the threshold and the wall are solid constructions. The gateway was also altered in a second phase. That the stairway was a wooden construction is confirmed by the recovery of nails and the other building elements. The gateway was closed at the time of their demolition. The last phase is related to the construction of walls 367 and 369. The walls were made of bricks and tile fragments and form a north-south oriented corner, which is set on the fill 366 and has destroyed the end of the northern wall the gateway. Finally, the excavations revealed a wall with an apsidal shape base (US 381). This structure does not relate to any of the other walls and it might represent a later adjustment, which is set in an existing area or abutts the western wall of the façade. This apse was uncovered in the layer US 368. In this layer were also revealed fragments of an inscribed marble stele which dates to the 2nd -3rd century A.D.
