Summary (English)

  • The 2012 campaign centred on the investigation of the so-called “Campo Nord”, where in preceding years the largest numbers of Aegean-Mycenaean pottery fragments have been found.

    The research involved a survey, core sampling, and the mapping of the surface sediments. The survey used a geo-referenced grid of 5 × 5 m squares covering an area of 5650 m².

    The majority of the finds were fragments of Bronze Age pottery, in particular BR2. Among the most important finds were 19 fragments of Aegean-Mycenaean pottery belonging to both open and closed forms. Most were concentrated in squares L-M 9-13 of the grid, while the other elements were found in square F11 and H-I 15. The only find spot outside of this area was in F2. Other finds included a bronze arrow head with a hollow haft and a fragment of a rod decorated with grooves and a herringbone pattern, probably part of a fibula; four annular blue glass beads; a small sliver of amber and a fragment of a bone-horn object decorated with grooves. The find of a polished green stone axe, datable to the Late-Eneolithic period, confirmed that the site was occupied in the phases preceding the settlement.

    Twenty-nine core samples were taken in the southern part of the grid. The distance between one sample and the next was usually 10 m, although in some cases it was 5 m. The samples formed 4 parallel transects on a W-SW/E-NE alignment. Each transect intercepted the “intra-site” area at the earthwork, while, in the case of the northernmost transect, the earthwork delimits the “off-site” area. The objective was to check for the presence of preserved patches of stratigraphy relating to the Bronze Age occupation. In fact, the area is known for having been heavily damaged by agricultural activity at the beginning of this century, when the area was levelled.

    All of the core samples stopped in correspondence with the “sub-boreal” peats. This operation established that the Bronze Age archaeological deposit in the “intra-site” strip close to the embankment was very patchy. Only two core samples showed thin (25-30 cm deep) patches of occupation still in situ not inside negative structures in the substratum. The base of the earthwork appeared to be preserved, although heavily cut by agricultural activity. The small ditch is well-preserved, as is the large ditch to the exterior of the earthwork. The modern agricultural intervention had therefore removed and put to one side the plough soil, almost completely removed the “intra-site” occupation layers and levelled the upper part of the earthwork. The materials removed from the “intra-site” were dumped beyond the earthwork so as to fill in the area between the earthwork and the edge of the terrace east of the site.
