Summary (English)

  • Between 2000 and 2003 an archaic necropolis was excavated in the territory of Poggio Marcuccio, east of the Etruscan fortification of Ghiaccio Forte. Four chamber tombs and a grave were investigated and the grave goods are undergoing conservation. Not far from the necropolis, a manmade heap of stones indicated the probable existence of another tomb. This was confirmed by excavation carried out in 2009 by the Museum of Scansano. A compact beaten floor incorporating fragments of coarse medieval pottery was evidence for a shelter occupied by shepherds using the route along the valley bottom. Below the beaten floor the walls of a rectangular chamber tomb could be seen, surrounded by a circular heap of stones. The chamber fill, disturbed in antiquity, was constituted by a few stones mixed with earth, and numerous, mainly fragmented, bones that were also visible on the fill surface. Fragments of bucchero and of an Attic kylix with a high foot were what remained of the grave goods and were sufficient to date the burial. Of importance, the presence on the chamber floor of two simple funerary beds, made of limestone with a raised border.
