Summary (English)

  • The 2012 campaign concentrated on the excavation of the early Neolithic level identified in 2010-2011. The aim was to obtain a definitive picture of the occupation in the grotto during the period relating to the funerary practices investigated in 2006-2008: that is the remains of 21 individual burials found in the innermost caves of the karstic network dating to the early Neolithic period.

The second objective was to identify a reference stratigraphy for the outcropping Pleistocene layers in order to plan future excavations.

    Work took place in:
Trenches B1 and D: continuation of the excavation of the Neolithic level down to the layers documenting the transition between the Pleistocene and Holocene periods.

Trench B2: continued the exploration of the area at the cave entrance, already partially excavated in 2008. A series of Pleistocene layers, underlying Pleistocene layer US 109 containing late Epigravettian evidence, with scarce evidence of human activity were partially investigated.

Trench B3: a new area was opened on the edge of trench B2, in order to extend the excavations into the only area of the cave yet to be investigated. Here, the same disturbed surface stratigraphy was exposed to a depth of about 50 cm where a Pleistocene level appeared.

Trench C: continuation of the investigation of the Neolithic level in the first inner cavity and extension of the area as far as the opening of the conduit leading into the innermost cavities where finds were recovered in 2006-2008.
