During the course of excavations archaeological evidence has come to light which mainly attests the late medieval and Renaissance topography of the road and the town.
Amongst the finds were:
• The north-eastern corner of a room delimited by walls circa 70 cm thick, made up of river stones and bricks used in various construction techniques (late medieval);
• A road surface, identified in two points of the road, made up of cobbles, river stones, brick fragments and opus signinum (15th century ?);
• A walled structure, built in part with large sandstone blocks on a footing of “handled” bricks and in part using a dry-stone technique, probably relating to the town’s defensive system;
• A well lined with bricks placed sideways on and covered with a thin layer of whitish mortar, with a covering dating to the mid 18th century. Further investigation seems to indicate that the 18th century well corresponds with the Roman aqueduct of Flavian date already identified in Meldola;
• An earth grave, badly preserved, containing the remains of two skeletons, one on top of the other, dating to between the mid 16th century and the first half of the 17th century;
• A small piece of wall in very bad condition, comprising mainly stones and brick fragments, perhaps linked to the town’s defences. (Maria Grazia Maioli)
