Summary (English)

  • Studies carried out of the monument allow us to confirm what previous investigations had already revealed: the asymmetrical position of the temple with respect to its base and other architectural elements of the complex, such as the side colonnades and the propylaea and the steps leading to the entrance. The east-west axis of the temple complex in fact does not correspond with that of the podium, but is about 1.46 metres to the south of the latter. This factor has been interpreted by M. Medri as being due to the fact that the Hadrianic project was probably conditioned by the pre-existing structures of the Neronian period. The scholar also hypothesizes that the fact that the axes do not correspond could be deliberate, with the aim of aligning the temple with the Via Sacra, perhaps to allow the Hadrianic building to be more visible from the Forum area. The axes of the Via Sacra and of the temple, which diverge by about 4 degrees, meet precisely at the western limit of the substructure of the cult building. The present architectural survey allows us to hypothesize that the design project of the Flavian amphitheatre, respecting the axes of the platea of the temple, was adapted to conform to a pre-existing axis, probably that of the vestibulum or of the lake of the domus Aurea. Therefore, while the lake disappeared under the mass of the amphitheatre, other areas of the Neronian palace, such as the vestibulum, survived and conditioned the future urban planning of this sector of the city
