The history of paleontology at Cene began in 1965 when a landslide in a quarry at the foot of the Monte Bue revealed an exceptional fossiliferous deposit. This was excavated between 1970 and 1975 the Bergamo Civic Museum of Natural Sciences, directed by Rocco Zimbelli, leading to the discovery of paleontological remains that are unique in the world. In 1992 the Comunità Montana Valle Seriana di Albino and the Bergamo Civic Museum of Natural Sciences began a joint project to recover and valorise the area following a request to release the area that was considered to be exhausted.

The Comunità Montana proceeded with the recovery of the area and its re-evaluation for didactic-cultural purposes through the creation of a visitors centre. At the same time the museum continued the paleontological stratigraphic research in order identify new finds on the site. The research was undertaken on a series of layers only 30 cm thick constituted by a series of prevalently marl laminae. The excavations revealed fossils of reptiles, fish, crustaceans, echinoderms and molluscs in an exceptional state of preservation.

In the carbonaceous layers of the Calcare di Zorzino numerous new examples were found, including the pterosaur Eudimorphodon ranzii, the earliest flying reptile ever discovered, as well as fossils belonging to at least 30 other species.

In 2008 the Lombardy region recognised the Park as a geo-site of world importance.

Today the two institutions, the Civic Museum of Natural Sciences and the Park of Cene, together with the Brembone Valley Natural Monument and the museum of Brembano di S. Pellegrino Terme are working together thanks to a full programme of initiatives: conferences, guided tours, refresher courses, publications and the web site: www. Triassico.it. The research projects are also programmed to achieve educational objectives such as respect for the research areas, communication of the results, stimulation and support for the publication of results.The zone is equipped for a gradual development of the research, in an zone that is now protected and above all recognised as the heritage of the local community.
