Summary (English)

  • Nine tumuli were investigated during the excavation in 2007. Special attention should be paid to the following:
Tumulus 22. A west-east oriented burial pit, 2.4 × 1.4 m in size and 0.75 m in depth. The height of the mound from the ancient horizon was 1 m. The remains of two male and female skeletons were found in the mixed by ancient robbers filling. Grave goods were represented by 28 bronze arrowheads and a pyramid clear-blue glass pendant.
Tumulus 25. The height of the mound was 0.8 m and 7 m in diameter. The tumulus was surrounded by 0.3 m in depth ditch. There were found the remains of a funeral feast: the parts of embossed jug and a pot, and some elk bones in a Western part of the ditch. There were documented the signs of the big fire in the Northern part of the mound. The tumulus had two synchronous burials.
The burial 1 was made in the rectangular pit, 2.65 × ’1.5 m in size and 0.4 m in depth. The burial pit was oriented west-south east. There were found a male skeleton, and horse bones and an iron knife with a bone handle in the north-eastern part of the grave. There were found the remains of a wooden quiver by the skull. There were also 56 bronze arrowheads over the buried warrior, javelin and spear heads, and a tip.
On the north from the burial 1 was the burial pit 2 that was oriented west-east. This was a rectangular pit, 2.75 × ’1.1 m in size and 1.2 m in depth. The burial was robbed in ancient times. The natural filling of a pit contained a female skull and bones and fragments of the burnt grave covering. There were 48 bronze arrowheads by the right knee. Ceremonial food (hooves and partially a chest of a calf), an iron knife with a bone handle and a small embossed salt cellar pannikin were found in the north-western corner of the grave.
Tumulus 34. It was a rectangular, oriented west-east, 2.8 × ’1.5 in size and 1.26 m in depth burial pit. Foot bones and a shin-bone were fixed in situ which means that the skeleton was oriented north-east. There were found some animal bones and an iron knife with a bone handle in the north-eastern corner. There were found 6 bronze arrowheads in the natural filling of a grave.
Tumulus 36. The height of the mound was 0.4 m. Two synchronous burials were documented. The burial rectangular pits were placed in parallel and oriented west-east with insignificant deflection. There were found bone dust, a triangular bronze arrowhead and a fragment of an iron knife in the filling of the burial 1 (2.5 × ’1.2 m in size, 0.55 m in depth). There was found a female skull that were laid on the left side in the eastern wall of a burial 2 (2.75 × ’1.2 m in size and 0.75 m in depth). A lower jaw bone laid beside.
There was a round paste bead by the skull. No traces of a skeleton, grave goods or robbery were found. This gives a reason to believe that only the skull was buried.
Tumulus 37. There were found the traces of a funeral feast (the fragments of the embossed pottery) in the southern part of the mound at the level of an ancient horizon. An oriented northern west – southern east, rectangular, 2.6 × ’1.3 m in size and 0.9 m in depth burial pit was documented. There was found a fragment of a skull and a knife with a bone handle in the bottom of the fill of the robbing pit.
The material evidence suggests that the burials of the Gryshkivskyi tumuli belonged to steppe Scythians that got to the southern outskirts of the forest-steppe in the end of the 5th – the beginning of the 4th century BC.
