Summary (English)

  • An area of almost 400 m2 was investigated, during the construction of a new housing block. Situated at the crossroads between the via Emilia and via Arzani, this site once lay outside the centre of ancient Dertona, to the north-east along the via Postumia. Previously, several groups of burials, dating to between the 4th and 6th century A.D., had been identified here.

The excavation identified three main phases in the stratigraphy: Period A, comprising a series of clay alluvial deposits containing no archaeological remains. Above this, the Roman period (Period B) was characterised by the creation of clay pits and their subsequent use as middens (organic materials and pottery), as well as several occupation levels with functional structures, baked clay surfaces, a hearth and several features made up of cobbles and amphora fragments probably functioning as drainage.

The area saw a long period of abandonment, preliminary date of between the 3rd and 5th century A.D., following which it was once again occupied (Period C), probably in association with the site of the church dedicated to SS. Simone e Giuda. At first a rectangular building in perishable materials was constructed, followed by a masonry-built dwelling and a well, maintaining the parallel alignment with the via Postumia.
