Summary (English)

  • The new excavation 15 was initiated at the Shestovytsya Hillfort in 2007. The excavation area was 137 sq. m. Here were recovered 13 pits and 7 households. Among them, there are households 2, 4—7 and pits 1, 2, 5 are dated to the 12th cent. AD; pits 3—4, 7—10, 12—13 are dated to the 8th cent. AD (Volyntsevs`ka culture); pit 11 are dated to 1st—3rd cent. AD (Late Zarubynets`ka (Piznyozarubynets`ka) culture).
The excavation 16 (70 sq. m.) is situated at the cape and separated from the Hillfort by the ditch. A defensive line was uncovered in the north part of the Hillfort in 2006. It consisted of the ditch with palisade (up to 0,8 m in width, up to 1,4 m in depth) and small ditch (up to 1,2 m in width, up to 1,1 m in depth) in front of it. Here archaeologists resumed excavations in 2007. To the south of the defensive line were found the remains of a large aboveground construction (postholes, trenches from decks, and the remains from two adobe hearths are dated to the 10th cent. AD).
Southwards of the excavation in the fill of the trench 5 (42 sq. m) were found only small fragments of the hand-made potteries and flint flake.
The new excavation site 17 (33 sq. m.) was initiated at the south-eastern part of the Hillfort. Here were partially traced two storerooms at a depth of 1,1 m. Here the excavation also revealed the traces of the reconstruction of the fortification sin the 12th cent. AD.
Among the materials from the Hillfort were found 2 iron twisted wristbands, fragments of the Byzantium amphoras with graffiti, silver belt plate, rivets of a sailing boat, ornamented bone point, one-sided comb, beads of different sizes and shapes.
In 2007 we continued studying central extramural part of a town (area is 700 —1000×80—400 m)., adjacent to the Hillfort on the north. Excavations continued to investigate the blacksmith`s property, which dates to 10th cent. AD. In the new area (196 sq. m.) was investigated a dwelling, with hearth was in the north-eastern corner. The building is dated to the 10th — early 11th cent. AD. Small trenches of the fence around the property were found nearby. In the property were found 200 artifacts. Among them: ceramic loomweights, keys from cubical locks and caskets, arrowheads of different types, battle knives with ribs , leads, fragments of an iron fish spear, half-finished and industrial waste of slate spindle whorls, ornamented knucklebones, bronze chain, a fragment of a bronze cauldron, a fragment of a fibula with spirally twisted ends etc.
