Summary (English)

  • The Hillfort on the Borzhava river belong to the fortification sites group of the Upper Tysa river. This group of the sites can be dated to the 900—1100 AD. The Borzhava hillfort also known as Vary (Hungarian `Var,` meaning `the castles`). The area of the hillfort was 0,7 ha. It was triangular on the plan and bounded to the configuration of the Cape (its height is 2—3 m). The bank of the hillfort on the Cape was preserved for 40 m; here its maximum height is 40 m. On the inland side it is 8.5 m. high.. In the east and the west parts of the site the bank was not traced. In the middle part of the bank from the field side wasthe entrance to the hillfort. The interior of the hillfort and partially the bank was destroyed by a cemetery in the late 19th — first third of the 20th cent. AD.
In 2006 the archaeologists initiated two trenches on the bank in the north-eastern part of the site and in the suburb. Four layers in trench 2 (16×2 m) were investigated.
Under an upper layer was discovered a surface with traces of fire and clusters of puddle clay. Two pots with composite profiles from the filling of this part allow us to date the upper layer and fire to the 12th—13th cent. AD. The fortification complex of the hillfort thus consisted of a bank with adobe wall and escarped river-side.
In the filling of the bank layers (level of yellow clay) were found 27 fragments of the wheel-made vessels (11th cent. AD). The level of gray clay contained no wares.
To obtain additional data trench 3 in the suburb was initiated. It was located southward of the hillfort`s entrance. As a result two layers were traced.
279 fragments of the wheel-made vessels originated from the upper filling. Among the finds were a spindle whorl made from perfectly-levigated clay with admixtures of sand. Judging by the wares found in this layer it relates to the 11th —12th cent. AD.8 fragments of the hand-made wares (some are polishing) were found in the lower filling. The claybody contained gravel. Proceedings of the excavations in 2006 confirmed the conclusion that fortifications of the Borzhava hillfort was constructing in the 11th cent. AD.
