During the summer 2012, excavations, run in the form of a summer school by the Seconda Università degli Studi di Napoli (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia ora Dipartimento di Lettere e Beni Culturali), continued on the upper terrace of the Rocca at Cumae.

The investigations concentrated on three main areas: the temple, the eastern slope of the terrace and a surface survey on the northern side of the hill. In the north and south naves of the temple, research concentrated on the identification and excavation of the burials relating to the church. The cella was the object of open area excavations that produced evidence of important new phases in the life of the complex. Further, trenches put into the baptistery revealed new burials, thought to be absent in this part of the church, and deepened the excavation as far as the natural bedrock in some places. Trenches were also put into limited sectors of the pronaos, in the empty spaces between burials, and in the western end of the north nave. Lastly, cleaning operations in the north nave uncovered limited areas of residual layers of collapse (recorded but not excavated), which had survived the digging at the beginning of the last century, and slight traces of new structures attributable to the church phase.

Other trenches were put in immediately outside the temple, on the northern terrace, while checks were undertaken on the terrace’s eastern slope revealing the presence of a monumental layout that will be investigated in coming campaigns.
