Summary (English)

  • The paleontological site of Medzhybizh has been known to geologists over 100 years. Its is located on the granite quarry on the bank of the Pivdenny Buh river. Geological layers deposition were studied by V. Laskaryov, V. Bondarchuk, M. Veklich. As the results of their works unequivocally signify, the Medzhybizh paleontological complex is dated to the Mindel-Riss Interglacial Stage.
The excavation was initiated at the location in 2009. The excavation area was 23 sq. m. In the section were discovered stratigraphic horizons top-down (soil units): Holocene(hl), Bug (bg), Vytachiv (vt), Uday (ud), Pryluky (pl), Kaydaky (kd), Dnipro (dn), Zavadivka (zv) and below was a granite. During the excavations in the deposits of the Zavadivka soil units (stage zv3 — Mindel-Riss Interglacial Stage) (by Zh. Matviyishyna, S. Karmazynenko) were recovered faunal remains, some damaged, some flint pebbles and their fragments, and objects made from other rocks (some were intentionally modified).
More than 10 modified bone fragments were found. They has single notches or groups of notches disposed at different angles relative to the long axis of the bone (length up to 20 mm).
The surface of the granite pedestal was covered by boulders. These are largely natural objects. But some of the stones were modified. Human modified stone artifacts from Medzhybizh include a chopping tool made of dark grey granite, an oval biface, three debris made of light grey granite, and a debris made of silicic rock.
Flint items were not numerous. Tools were made from small grained brown flint. Such an artifact was found in 2009 made of this raw from Zavadivka soil units. This is a core for micro flakes. The core size is 20×20×21 mm. The traces signify that during the flaking a direct, strong strike of a percussor (hard hammer) was used.
