Summary (English)

  • The remains of the stone earthwork are located on a hill in a floodplain of the Pivdennyy Buhriver`s left bank. It is oriented east—west and measures 640×280 m. One side of the square fortification, 140 m long, is formed by a 4—20 m wide fosse and a rampart 4 m high. O In the north-easternand south-western corners were observed stone mounds covered with topsoil. Perhaps these are the remains of the corner towers`. The fortification sides` are concave towards the center . Judging by the construction, this fortress, or castle, belonged to the tenaille defensive-work type.
The excavation (100 sq. m.) was initiated in 2006. As a result it is clear that the citadel`s keep is represented by the stone-earth mound (width — 16,2 m, height — 1,4 m). In the mound`s basement were revealed a construction of timber frames placed one on another. The mound was bounded from inside and outside with stone walls.
The inward wall is narrower than outward (width — 0,6 m), and is preserved t a height of 1,3 m. It is built of stones (0,1×0,2 m and 0,15×0,3 m). Between the inward area of the citadel and the outer wall the ground slopes downwards.
The outer wall’s width is 2,6 m and its height is 1,7 m. It was plastered on the exterior, with small fragments of bricks in the ground and its lower part is under water.. The wall was made from shell rock slabs (the sizes 0,1×0,5 m),the gaps between slabs filled with small stones. Between the outward wall and the framework was revealed the scarp`s fragments (1,9×3,4 m) laid out with granite.
The timber framework (4×4 m) was made of logs (diameter — 0,3 m). The timber was sunken 70 cm. In the northern part of the timber were found small stones` fragments, bricks, tiles. The central part were filled with dark soil with only some ceramic fragments of the Trypillya culture.
Finds in this season are not numerous. Fragments of construction materials (mono- and polychrome tiles, bricks, etc.) and fragments of smoky wares were found. Among metal finds are: nails of the different types, and fragments of armaments.
